Aether Wings I

Broken Angel
---
Shadowlands-04 by Merieth
One month earlier, a war of epic proportions between two divine angels - Kayle and Morgana - broke out in the Heavens. Kayle the Judicator, fought for Justice, Order and Balance. Kayle's dark sister, Morgana, stood against the Judicator's tyranny, claiming that her rule would be one of shackles - freedom and individuality would be sacrificed under Kayle's rule.

The two great forces clashed for what would be a century in mortal time, but Morgana's black magics proved too powerful for Kayle and her army; the dark angel floated over countless corpses of the Judicator's fallen allies, eager to strike Kayle down herself.

Amidst a pile of bones and bloodied feathers was Kayle, still fighting valiantly despite being surrounded by death; Heaven's sky darkened as Morgana's influence extended further - the war was over, and Morgana emerged victorious. All that was left was to dispose of Kayle ...

The two sisters battled one-on-one, but Kayle was too badly injured to prove a worthy opponent; Morgana mocked her sister as she shackled the Judicator's body in chains of darkness, and then she asked her once more as she held out a hand covered in the blood of Kayle's allies:
"Join me, sister. Though you abandoned our blood-ties, I am not so foolish - I offer you one last chance."
Kayle refused her sister's foul 'mercy' and struck out with her blade, drawing blood from Morgana, who howled out in fury. The Judicator lowered her head, awaiting her honorable death - to die for a just cause was the last blessing a pure angel-warrior such as she could want.

Morgana knew this and smirked devilishly before brutally ripping the Judicator's wings from her bloodied body whilst cackling maniacally. She then tore open the space beneath her, creating a hole which led to the mortal world of Runeterra, and discarded Kayle, forevermore banishing her from the Heavenly Realm.

Afterward, Runeterra became plagued by darkness, demons and monsters. When Kayle drew breath in this horrid world, she looked around in a daze; she stood and found herself in a pile of her own bloody feathers - her wings, her precious wings... were gone: torn and broken, just as her spirit and mind.

Kayle dragged herself through the mud, hopelessly clinging to her sword and her sanity as she trudged onward.

Present Day
Ghost-land 1280x800 29117 by Merieth
Kayle had been wandering this wasteland planet for weeks; the sun itself was a rare sight, but every so often its rays would claw through the thick cover of clouds and light the dismal world. The light shines upon me, as if to pull me ever-forward, but what is left of me? I am but the pale shell of a proud warrior, the shadow of a distant memory...

Cast out, my pride and honor ripped from me in one stroke - once, I strove to be the new Light of Heaven; I fought for Justice and Order, thinking I had become the symbol for Divine Truth... yet here I stand amidst the mud and rubble of an obscure mortal world, while Heaven shudders in darkness. Was Morgana the rightful advocate of Divine Truth? ...Was her proposed rule the true Path of Divine Justice?

The broken angel trekked endlessly through the somber lands - she saw countless monsters and demons roaming free, but there was naught she could do. My spirit is broken, and with it, so too is my power... the holy flames are weak, hardly enough to burn even the tiniest blade of grass - this empty existence of mine mocks those who fell in the War.

A musty wind blew across the land, and Kayle lifted her hand to the sky. "I have dishonored my comrades... I must atone for my sins, but my weak heart is almost too heavy to bear..." To remember what I once was, how could I have fallen as such? I must push forward ... even if I am trapped to live such a pitiful life, there is surely beauty to be found.

She gazed at the dim rays of light which shone through the gray-black sky. "Yes, even now... there is still light. Broken though I am, as long as there is life in me... my identity remains true. I am Kayle, the Judicator!" She raised her sword to the sky for a moment before thrusting it into the ground and kneeling.

My dear comrades... I regret that I have not the power to avenge you, but I shall continue walking our sacred Path. I can only pray that you forgive me, some day... Kayle opened her eyes and clenched the hilt of her sword mournfully. "I must atone. Guide me, my ... my friends." She whispered quietly, her hand shaking slightly as her eyes lifted to the sky one final time before she continued onward.

As the days went on, Kayle's sanity continued to slip away - the memory of her wings being torn away haunted her constantly. An angel lacking wings is doomed to chaos and insanity. I must resist it... but my mind is already becoming clouded.

"Monsters and disasters ravage this world..." Kayle noted after she had passed by several ruined villages. I would wish to cleanse it, if it were within my power. She could hardly remember who she had been before she had been banished to this mortal realm; rarely, she had murky visions of a valiant, winged warrior clad in gold and red, leading a grand army into the light, but as she desperately tried to grasp the vision, it would fade to black.

...

"The chaotic atmosphere is so thick... perhaps it is a fitting place for a broken being like me?" She shook her head. My purpose... my purpose, what is it? What drives me forward...? Her thoughts seemed to drift further and further away as she reached for them, and so she simply pressed forward, led by the dismal breeze.

After many days of aimless traveling, Kayle came across a small, serene village located in the wintry lands of Freljord - the people living there were robust and equally kind. The village leader, Ashe, offered the weary traveler a place to stay for the night, since Runeterra was doubly dangerous in complete darkness.

Kayle accepted Ashe's kind offer and made her way to Ashe's guest room; as she sat on the rickety old wooden bed, Kayle stared at the crackling fireplace on the far side of the room. It is the first time I've met a mortal... I am surprised by her kindness, despite the state of this world. Her eyes were full of hope.

The angel was warmed by the strength of the Freljordians, and suddenly, her blade became surrounded by holy flames - its power was nearly one-third of its full potential. "Perhaps I will... remain here for a time." Yes, even in this broken world... beauty remains, hidden though it may be.

This beauty... must be protected.

Kayle spent the next few hours meditating, but she was interrupted by a distant, disturbing howl, followed by a screech. She stood abruptly and gripped her blade, "I sense it... something foul and corrupt. I must protect these people!" For a moment she felt the urge to fly into battle, but soon remembered her lack of wings - there was no time to mourn.

The angel ran as fast as her feet could carry her through the snow and ice - finally Kayle had a newfound purpose: to protect the peace of the small Freljord village. As the morning sun burst through the darkened sky, she found herself surrounded by icy peaks, a dark, powerful figure loomed in the distance.

The sight of the shining sun bodes well for me. Kayle raised her sword, a flaming halo appearing over her head; her sword became white-hot as she took a battle stance. He approaches... a great host of demonic corruption. The figure became more visible now; it appeared to be a warped human, but the main thing Kayle noticed about him was the gigantic demonic blade he carried, likely the source of his corruption.

I will purge your corrupt soul from this world!
