Love in the Darkness

The Mystery
---

Suki was a twenty-three year old young woman who worked at a bank from 8:00AM to 4:30PM; when she wasn't working, she was often practicing her favorite hobby: drawing. She lived to enjoy life and took things day by day, finding the good in everything that she does.

'There is light in everyone, sometimes it's just buried underneath the shadows.' -- was her motto. One day, Suki noticed that several of her co-workers had not been coming in to work for the last few days, but heard nothing of what had happened to them. Worried, she contacted her boss...

--

Suki picked up the phone and dialed her boss's number after work one day, and after several rings, he picked up. "Hello?" Her boss said. "Mrs. Akisawa? It's me, Suki. Um, I haven't seen Sora, Kira or Mai the last few days... are they okay?" There was a short silence on the phone. "Oh... Suki, don't worry yourself dear! They've... gone on vacation for a while, you see. You'll have to cover for them for now."

"Vacation...?" Suki sensed that it was a subterfuge, but decided that it wasn't her place to pry -- she didn't want to anger her boss; finding a steady, good-paying job nowadays was too difficult to risk being fired over something so minor. "Okay, thank you. Sorry for bothering you, Mrs. Akisawa. Good night!"

"Y-yes, good night, Suki. Thank you for being such a good and loyal worker," Mrs. Akisawa said. "Good night, dear." She hung up the phone and Suki leaned back on the couch, grabbing the remote and turning on the television. "Those three didn't even answer their phones when I called the," She sighed, flipping through the channels. "I guess I'm just being a worrywart."

Suki slumped down on her side on the couch and yawned. "Tomorrow's Saturday... I should go out with some friends. Hmmm," She reached for her phone on the table and looked through her contacts list, scrolling down until she reached her best friend's number. Smiling, she dialed the number and waited...

"Hello?" It was Suki's best friend, Rika. "Heeey Rika! Do you want to hang out tomorrow? Maybe we could go to the mall and grab lunch, then head out to the park after some shopping? Oooh, we could get our hair done too, if you want!"

"Suki! Sure, sounds great. Hey, I saw in the news recently that some of your co-workers went missing... but a report today said that they were just on vacation. Have you heard anything about that? I've been worried about you, maybe you should quit your job. Ever since you got transferred to that new bank in the city..." Her voice trailed off.

"Aww, don't worry about me, Rika! I'll be just fine, dear," Suki was smiling. "But... that is a little weird. Why would the news report such a story without having all the information first? That's... really odd. But, we can't dwell on it, right? Mrs. Akisawa confirmed that those three are on vacation, and she's not the type of lady to lie!"

"...Yeah, I guess you're right. Still, I wish you could come back and work work here in this little town again, but I guess you're a city girl now, huh?" Rika sounded a bit sad. "Aww girl, don't say that. I'll always be a small town lady! But they transferred me here, and I need the money... so you know how it goes." Suki replied, changing the channel to a local news station.

The two friends talked until it was late, then finally they both hung up and went to sleep.

The next day, Rika and Suki went to the mall and had a great time at the salon, then headed to a buffet for lunch. "Soooo Rika, did you find a boyfriend yet?" Suki asked, raising her eyebrows as she stirred her hot clam chowder. Rika blushed and took a sip of tea, "No. What about you?"

"Hmmm, I've seen a couple nice-looking guys, but none are my type," Suki replied with a shrug. "I need a man with style... gothic, and sexy. And smart..." She giggled. "I'd really like to meet a teacher, or aspiring teacher... but I'm sure he's out there looking for me, too!"

"Hehe... yeah, I'm sure you're right." Rika finished her tea and eyed the fried chicken on her plate. "I just want to meet someone nice.." She sighed hopelessly. "But I'm not pretty enough, maybe!"

"Rika! Don't say that, you're really pretty! My best friend is super beautiful! Have some confidence," Suki said, pointing her spoon at Rika. "How about we go to the beach tomorrow? I bet we'll attract lots of hot guys."

"I-I dunno," Rika took a bite out of a chicken wing. "I feel kinda nervous in a bathing suit..."

"Hey girl, you look great. We'll be the coolest girls at the beach!" Suki tried to assure her friend. "I-I guess so... I wish I was confident, like you! But um, I'll go... let's shop for some bathing suits after this."

"Sure, sounds great!"

Suki and Rika were enjoying themselves on the beach, but the latter was a bit embarrassed and walked around with a towel around her the entire time. "You're going to get a weird tan like that, Rika!" Suki warned. "I'm not getting tan, I'm getting a sunburn..." Rika sighed, hiding under an umbrella. "Hey, I'm gonna grab us some drinks! Wait here, okay?"

"Okay..." Rika nodded, and Suki ran off to the bar...

The man in charge of the drinks bar was around Suki's age and had a sexy gothic look about him -- he was tall, thin and had dark hair and bright blue eyes -- but he was very soft-spoken and polite when dealing with his customers. His eyes met Suki's, and she winked playfully at him. He blushed and lowered his eyes before asking: "Hi, what would you like?"
